Unfortunately, for many of us, the term God comes laden with many other messages as well such as fear, pain, sadness and even severe skepticism which only serves to rob us of the incredible experience and truth of connecting to The Source. I have come to call this Source, Spirit. I chose this word because of its simplicity and have vowed to define it for myself, (as I suggest you do as well), as: the pure, sacred essence within; likened to a seed that will always burst forth with exactly what is contained within it, given a chance.
Recently added to this definition is; made up of all the Laws of the Universe that make everything possible, just as it is. This concept was added recently as I learned that if the basics of the Laws of the Universe (that we are currently aware of) were changed even a slight degree, then all would not exist as it does. This is a powerful testament to the incredible perfection of The Source; as it is clearly perfection by very definition. I can honestly say too; Spirit exists within, only because I have personal experience of it, and now am able to see it so clearly in others.
My conclusion is that it is not necessary to believe the stories in the Bible actually happened, in fact if we argue over the same, we are missing the most important point of the stories completely. What is most important is that we have Faith; Faith there is a Universal Power at work of which we have little physical or actual evidence. This Universal Power, call it God, Higher Self, Universal Consciousness, or whatever you like, is one and the same; The Source. There can be "no other God before me" if there is only one God.
If the stories of the many religions of the world were told centuries before Christ or Buddha or Mohammed, and these same stories are found in most doctrine from around the world, then the Truth can be simplified to; There is only one Source...call it what you may.
